What are access control cards and tags?
Access control cards and tags are physical credentials that grant authorised entry to restricted areas. They contain encoded information that identifies the holder and their access permissions. When presented to a compatible reader, the credential item transmits data either wirelessly or through contact, allowing the system to verify whether the person should be granted entry. They're commonly used in offices, apartment buildings, and secure facilities as a convenient and trackable alternative to traditional keys.
What is the difference between access control tags and cards, and what are the strengths of each?
Tags are typically RFID based and are small and flexible devices that can be embedded into various items (such as key fobs) to enable access to individuals. Cards on the other hand are regular-sized credential items that can fit into wallets and badge holders, which may be more suitable for professional environments. Tags are helpful for hands-free access, whereas cards are arguably smarter and make for easier visual identification. You can of course use both if you wish!
