How do fire door magnets work?

Fire door magnets operate using electromagnetic technology connected to your building's fire alarm system. When smoke or heat triggers the alarm, an electrical signal causes the electromagnet to deactivate instantly. This breaks the magnetic hold, releasing the door so it can close automatically via a door closer. The system ensures continuous fire safety by keeping doors open during normal operations while providing instantaneous closure during emergencies, maintaining compartmentalisation throughout your building.

Do magnetic fire door holders need to be released manually?

Magnetic fire door holders are designed to release automatically during a fire, so manual intervention isn't necessary. When a fire alarm is triggered or smoke is detected, the electromagnetic lock disengages instantly, allowing the door to close and prevent smoke and flames from spreading. This automatic release mechanism is a key safety feature that ensures doors seal properly without requiring occupants to remember to close them manually during an emergency.

Do magnetic doors need to open in a fire?

During a fire, magnetic fire doors don't need to open; they must close to contain smoke, heat and flames. When fire detection systems activate, the magnetic lock releases, allowing the door to swing shut under its own weight or via a closer mechanism. This automatic closure is critical for compartmentalisation, preventing fire spread to other areas of the building and protecting escape routes. Manual opening during a fire would compromise fire safety and is never recommended.

How to reset magnetic fire doors

After a fire alarm has been triggered, most magnetic fire door systems require manual reset by authorised personnel. Once the alarm is cleared, you'll typically need to press a reset button on the magnetic unit itself or use a control panel, depending on your system's design. Some installations may reset automatically after a set period. Always consult your building's fire safety documentation or contact your fire door installer for specific reset procedures, as protocols vary between different systems and buildings.
