What is a proximity card reader?
A proximity card reader is a device used to read information stored on proximity cards, which are small, portable cards that contain an embedded microchip. These readers use radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to wirelessly communicate with the card, allowing for quick and convenient access control. Proximity card readers are therefore used in various settings to manage entry and exit points securely.
How does a proximity card reader work?
A proximity card reader operates by emitting a low-frequency electromagnetic field. When a proximity card is brought close to the reader, the card's embedded microchip is activated. The reader then sends a signal to the card, which responds by transmitting its unique identification code. This code is then processed by the reader, which can grant or deny access based on pre-programmed settings. The entire process is quick and seamless, typically taking less than a second.
What is a biometric reader?
A biometric reader is a security device that uses unique biological characteristics to verify an individual's identity. These readers can scan various biometric traits, such as fingerprints, iris patterns, facial features, or even voice recognition. By converting these biological traits into digital data, biometric readers provide a highly secure method of authentication. They are widely used in high-security environments, such as government facilities, banks, and corporate offices, where traditional methods like passwords or PINs may not be sufficient.
