What is an ‘AHD PTZ’ camera?
AHD (Analog High Definition) PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras combine three key technologies to deliver flexible, high-quality surveillance. AHD refers to the video transmission method. These cameras send high-definition analog video signals over standard coaxial cable, similar to traditional CCTV but with significantly better image quality. PTZ functionality means the camera can pan (move left and right), tilt (move up and down), and zoom in on distant objects. This combination allows a single camera to monitor large areas whilst being controlled by an operator, making it ideal for applications like car parks, warehouses, and perimeter security where you need both coverage flexibility and HD image quality.
What is the main advantage of AHD PTZ cameras over fixed cameras?
AHD PTZ cameras provide excellent flexibility and cost-effectiveness for large-area surveillance. While a fixed camera captures only one static view, a single PTZ camera can cover the equivalent area of 5-10 fixed cameras by panning, tilting, and zooming to track activity across a wide space. This means you purchase fewer cameras, install less cabling, and reduce overall system complexity and operational costs. Operators can respond to incidents in real-time by directing the camera to focus on specific areas, making PTZ ideal for high-traffic locations, large facilities, and situations where you need dynamic, responsive monitoring. Additionally, operators can create automated patrol routes for the camera that continuously scan critical areas without human intervention.
What's the difference between AHD and IP PTZ cameras?
AHD and IP PTZ cameras serve similar purposes but use fundamentally different transmission technologies. AHD cameras send high-definition analog video over traditional coaxial cable, making them compatible with existing analog infrastructure and simpler to install in retrofits. IP cameras transmit video over network connections using Ethernet cable, which enables remote viewing from anywhere with internet access and also integrates with modern IT infrastructure. AHD systems typically don't require network configuration, making them ideal for facilities with existing analog systems or those wanting straightforward, localised monitoring. IP cameras, however, offer good levels of flexibility, advanced features like artificial intelligence and analytics, easier multi-site management, and better integration with modern security ecosystems. AHD is best for budget-conscious upgrades to analog systems; IP is usually preferred for new installations prioritising remote access and advanced features.
Do AHD PTZ cameras support preset positions?
Yes, virtually all AHD PTZ cameras allow you to save and recall multiple preset positions which dramatically improves efficiency. You can save frequently monitored locations-such as an entrance, parking area, loading dock, or storage room and operators can recall these positions instantly with a button press or keyboard shortcut. Most cameras support anywhere from 4 to 256 different presets, giving you tremendous flexibility in mapping important surveillance zones. Beyond simple positioning, many PTZ cameras also support automated patrol cycles that automatically work through your saved presets at user-defined intervals, continuously monitoring critical areas without operator intervention. This is invaluable for 24/7 facilities where constant human monitoring isn't practical.
