What is an intruder detection system?

An intruder detection system (sometimes known as an IDS) is a type of security technology that monitors a premises for unauthorised access or suspicious activity. It uses various detection surfaces such as sensors, cameras, motion detectors or software algorithms to spot breaches, then alerts the owner or a monitoring service. Some IDS can also trigger automatic responses, such as locking doors or sounding alarms, to deter further intrusions and protect assets.

When should intruder alarm system batteries be replaced?

Intruder alarm system batteries typically need replacing every 2 to 5 years, depending on the type of alarm and the usage pattern. Regular battery checks are essential to ensure the system remains reliable. It’s advisable to replace batteries before they reach the end of their lifespan, to avoid any potential failures. If your alarm system has a low battery indicator, you’ll need to replace the batteries promptly.

How do intruder alarm systems work?

Intruder alarm systems consist of several components, including sensors, a control panel, and an alarm. Sensors are typically placed at entry points such as doors and windows, and they detect movement or changes in the environment. When a sensor is triggered, it sends a signal to the control panel. The control panel then activates the alarm, which can be an audible siren, a visual alert, or a notification sent to a monitoring centre or a designated mobile device or set of devices. Some advanced systems also include features like integration with smart homes, or smart buildings in the case of businesses and organisations, for enhanced security.
