What are PIR detectors?
PIR (passive infrared) detectors are designed to sense heat signatures and associated movement, and are a popular choice for CCTV systems due to them being an affordable option that works well in most environments that they are deployed in. PIR is suitable for most indoor applications.
Will my CCTV detector work with my existing system?
It is likely that your detector will integrate with your existing system, but at Videcon we would always recommend checking the documentation of your chosen device to make sure that it will work with your existing framework.
What kind of detection range can I expect?
This will vary by model and will usually be around 5 to 15 metres for standard PIR detectors, although at Videcon we stock several detectors capable of working at 20-25 metres or more. Range typically depends on the lens angle of the sensor, the height at which it is installed, and environmental factors (temperature fluctuations being one).
Can I use outdoor detectors indoors and vice versa?
We would generally recommend against this. Outdoor detectors are often weatherproofed for outdoor environments and often have wider detection angles optimised for open spaces. Indoor detectors are typically more sensitive and compact but lack weatherproofing. Using an outdoor detector indoors can work albeit with a possibly reduced effectiveness, but indoor detectors will tend to perform poorly outdoors.
What happens if there's a power outage?
Wired detectors powered by your system will stop functioning during an outage. Wireless detectors will continue operating on their own battery supply. If continuous monitoring during outages is critical, consider a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for your system.
How do I choose between wired and wireless detectors?
Whether you choose a wireless or wired detector will depend on your own unique circumstances. Wired detectors tend to be very reliable, will never need batteries replacing, and are well suited for permanent installation. Wireless detectors on the other hand are easier and more convenient to install due to the lack of cabling requirements and are more flexible for positioning around a premises. They do need battery checks every so often, however.
