How can I ensure reliable connectivity with my networking products?
Installing networking products is only the beginning of the story; it’s important to keep them in good condition and order throughout their lifecycle so that connectivity issues don’t appear. Here are some tips to get the most out of your networking devices:
- Regular checks and maintenance – this will vary according to manufacturer guidelines, but it’s always a good idea to schedule regular checks on network equipment to ensure it’s functioning correctly and that there aren’t any issues with physical damage or misconfiguration.
- Update firmware regularly – particularly important in terms of patching security vulnerabilities, keeping firmware up to speed can also help to squash bugs and keep everything running smoothly.
- Keep a close eye on network traffic – there are plenty of high quality network monitoring tools available to monitor networks for bottlenecks or problems, which can save headaches further down the line.
- Redundancies – a good backup system is worth its weight in gold when a failure occurs.
What are network switches and what do they do?
A network switch is a device that connects multiple other devices together on a local area network (also known as a LAN) they receive data packets from devices that are connected to them and send those data packets onwards to the correct destination. Switches create dedicated connections between devices, which is a positive benefit for the security and efficiency of a given network. They are an essential component in the infrastructure of any network setup, supporting a wide variety of devices at any one given time.
What are network injectors and what do they do?
Network injectors are often referred to as PoE (Power over ethernet) injectors, and they allow the transmission of power through ethernet cables. This handy functionality enables devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones and other IoT devices to be powered without the need for separate power cables, which can be very useful depending on the networking setup in question. This simplifies installation, reduces cable clutter and allows the placement of networked devices in areas where power outlets are either not located or unavailable, which makes them a valuable tool where flexible network deployment is necessary.
How do I determine the right transmission unit for my needs?
You’ll want to look at a variety of factors when choosing a transmission unit for your network. You may wish to consider the following aspects:
- Data Transfer Speed - Ensure that the bandwidth is supported by the unit, and that data transfer will be smooth. We supply units with transfer speeds as high as 500 MBPS, so this shouldn’t be a problem!
- Distance - Distance travelled may be a factor. At Videcon we stock transmission units with ranges from 5KM all the way up to 15KM, to give you maximum flexibility when choosing what you’ll need for your networking setup.
- Environmental Conditions - In instances where environmental conditions may be an issue, look for outdoor and ruggedised gear that can withstand the elements.
- Compatibility - Make sure it's compatible with your existing network infrastructure, to avoid integration issues when it’s time to install.
