Safeguarding Schools with Videcon

Martyn's Law officially became UK law on 3rd April 2025, giving establishments until April 2027 to meet new public safeguarding regulations set by the SIA (Security Industry Authority). These requirements introduce standard and enhanced tiers to ensure that protective measures are in place to deter and respond to potential terrorist threats effectively.

In our first blog of this series, we explore what Martyn's Law means for safeguarding and how we at Videcon can help you deliver solutions that meet the new standards.

Find out more about this in our first blog in this series.

Safeguarding Schools

Schools and educational facilities will be among the key establishments affected, with safeguarding requirements extending beyond everyday safety to include counter-terror prevention.

This presents a vital opportunity for installers to work closely with education providers, ensuring sites are equipped with reliable surveillance, access control and communication systems that meet the enhanced security expectations.

Identifying Security Needs

When it comes it engaging with schools and other education establishments, a proactive and consultative approach is key.

We suggest starting by reaching out to the facility managers, safeguarding leads, MATs and headteachers to offer a free site assessment and make sure they have undertaken their terrorism risk assessment. This opens the door for a conversation around their current security action plan, potential risks and how to enhance safety in line with the upcoming legal obligations.

If building plans or site layouts are available, these can be invaluable, allowing us to provide you with more precise guidance on where security measures are most needed. Understanding each site's unique challenges will enable you to propose relevant solutions and build trust as a knowledgeable partner.

Condition Improvement Fund (CIF)

The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) is dedicated to helping schools undertake projects that ensure their building remain safe, prioritising initiatives that ensure their buildings remain safe, piroritising initatives that address health and safety compliance. This fund presents a valuable opportunity for educational institutions to obtain financial support for critical safeguarding enhancements. Eligible upgrades include access control, intruder alarms, CCTV and lockdown systems to strengthen site security.

Security installers working with schools should be aware that these funded projects present a growing pipeline of work, especially as education sites, along with all other venues, need to meet compliance deadlines ahead of April 2027 or risk fines.
